In the arena, the enslaved Thracian manages to defeat four opponents and in allowing the Thracian to live, Senator Albinius decides to name him after a Thracian king from the past: Spartacus. Meanwhile, a financially strapped Batiatus receives an opportunity of a lifetime that involves his battling band of gladiators. To survive, he must become more than a man.
Torn from his homeland and the woman he loves, Spartacus is condemned to the brutal world of the arena where blood and death are primetime entertainment. Varro is visited by his wife with disturbing news, and Crixus finally awakens from his near death battle. While there, he makes an enemy of the powerful and ruthless Crixus and gets whipped into fighting shape by the whip-wielding taskmaster Doctore. Spartacus meets Ilithyia, the wife of Glaber, while Batiatus learns of his attackers. With Barca gone, Doctore suspects fowl play and Pietros is taken advantage of.
More of that, he wins the love of the crowd and becomes their favorite, so the Roman Senator replaces his death warrant with the life of slavery. One of them in particular refuses to fight and rebels against the Romans only to lose the fight and is enslaved along with his wife Sura. Rome's only hope is Marcus Crassus who, aided by young Julius Caesar, will do his might to crush Spartacus and his rebellion. Barca expects to buy his and his male lover's way out, while Spartacus anticipates his promised reunion with his enslaved wife, part of his reward for a monumental victory in the arena. But instead of being killed Spartacus himself kills gladiators whose task was to execute him and proves to be a fearless and formidable warrior.
